Matarawanda Women's Art
Matarawanda Women’s Art is a group of
Zanzibar artists and craftswomen who
make handmade treasures from
overlooked, old and discarded materials.
Our art is an act of renewal that is
reflected in our name and our philosophy.
Matarawanda--the name for the ancient
wooden shoes worn by our foremothers--
reflects our desire to walk in the footsteps
of those strong, independent women who
were queens and community leaders,
teachers and healers, workers and
mothers.
The goals of our organization are to:
Design and teach new crafts that use
recycled materials. We take pride in
creating quality products that combine
originality with classic Zanzibar style and
also help to preserve the environment;
• Develop outreach programs for
young women in the community who have
few outlets for their creativity;
• Promote the tradition of strong and
vital women through performance, drama,
and exhibitions which promote local styles
and customs that empower women.
